Fizzing Hands

A hands-on science activity that turns a kitchen glove into a foamy, fingertip-spraying spectacle using baking soda and vinegar. It’s a fun demonstration that visually shows a chemical reaction.

  • Total Time: 15 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 tablespoons ARM & HAMMER baking soda
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • Liquid dish soap
  • Food coloring
  • 1 wide-mouth jar
  • 1 vinyl, rubber, or plastic glove
  • 1 spoon
  • 1 paper clip
  • Rubber bands
  • 1 baking sheet or tray
  • Safety glasses or goggles

Instructions

  1. Set up the jar and tray. Place the wide-mouth jar on the baking sheet or tray. Keep the tray on a stable surface while you prepare the mixture.
  2. Mix the liquid ingredients. Add 1 cup of vinegar to the jar, along with a good squeeze of liquid dish soap and a few drops of food coloring. Stir gently with a spoon or swirl the jar to combine. Set the jar aside on the tray.
  3. Prepare the glove. An adult should use the pointed end of a paper clip to poke one small hole in each fingertip of the glove. Keep the glove away from children while making the holes, and handle the paper clip carefully.
  4. Load the baking soda. Measure 3 tablespoons of ARM & HAMMER baking soda and put it into the glove. Shake the glove gently so the baking soda settles into its fingertips.
  5. Fit the glove over the jar. Stretch the open end of the glove over the top of the jar. Secure it around the base of the jar’s opening with rubber bands. Check that the glove is attached firmly and that the baking soda remains inside it.
  6. Move the setup outdoors. Put on safety glasses or goggles, then take the tray with the jar and glove outside. Set it on a flat, stable surface. Ask everyone to stand back from the glove’s fingertips.
  7. Start the reaction. Gently tip the glove so the baking soda falls into the jar. Swirl the jar carefully to mix the ingredients, then move back. Foam will form and may spray out through the holes in the fingertips.
  8. Let the activity finish. Do not lean over the jar while it is foaming. Wait until the reaction has subsided before approaching the tray or handling the glove and jar.

Notes

Ensure adult supervision at all times due to the use of a paper clip and the reaction's potential for spills.
