Ingredients
- 1/2 cup clear-drying school glue
- 8 to 12 small pressed flowers or petals, fully dry and flat
- 1 sheet of wax paper, at least 8 inches by 10 inches
- 1 sheet of plain paper, at least 8 inches by 10 inches
- 1 small silicone brush or 1 foam brush, about 1 inch wide
- 1 wooden craft stick, 4.5 inches long
- 1 toothpick
- 1 small ruler, at least 6 inches long
- 1 pencil
- 1 pair of medium size scissors
- 1 small paper cup, 3 fluid ounces
- 1 small plate or tray, at least 8 inches wide
- 1 cotton swab
- 1 piece of twine, 12 inches long
- 1 small hole punch, 1/8 inch to 1/4 inch opening
- 1 disposable table covering, at least 2 feet by 3 feet
- 1 pair of reusable nitrile or household gloves (optional)
Instructions
- Cover your table with the disposable table covering.
- Place a small tray in the center of the table and put the wax paper on the tray, smoother side facing up.
- Using a ruler and pencil, mark a 5 inch by 7 inch rectangle on the plain paper and slide it under the wax paper.
- Pour 1/2 cup of clear-drying glue into the paper cup, and add half of it into the center of the marked rectangle.
- Use the craft stick or silicone brush to spread the glue toward the corners, aiming for a layer about 1/8 inch thick with no bare wax paper showing.
- Wait about 10 minutes for the glue to settle until it still feels tacky but no longer runs when the tray is gently tilted.
- Arrange the largest flower or petal slightly off center, then add the smaller pieces around it, pressing each lightly with a toothpick or clean end of the craft stick.
- If a petal traps a bubble beneath it, lift one edge with the toothpick and smooth it back down.
- Pour the remaining glue over the flowers in small lines and spread it gently until every petal has a clear coating.
- Use a cotton swab to clean any glue that has wandered outside the rectangle.
- Leave the tray undisturbed in a dry room for 24 to 48 hours to allow the panel to dry flat.
- Once dry, peel the panel slowly from the wax paper, starting at one corner, and cut away any ragged glue threads.
- Make a small hole near the top center and thread the piece of twine through the hole, tying a small knot to hang the suncatcher.
Notes
Keep the glue away from eyes and mouths, and wash your hands after handling it. Children can help with flower placement when supervised. Keep the finished piece away from direct, hot afternoon sun.
