Ingredients
- About 120 yards of worsted weight acrylic yarn in green
- A small amount of brown or dark green yarn
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Sharp scissors
- One stitch marker (optional)
- Tape measure
- Small amount of polyester fiberfill (about 0.25 ounce or 7 g)
Instructions
- With green yarn, make a foundation chain of 30 chains. Join the last chain to the first with a slip stitch, being careful not to twist the chain.
- Round 1: Chain 1, then work one half double crochet in each chain around. Join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet. You have 30 stitches.
- Round 2: Chain 1, then work one half double crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch. Count 30 stitches.
- Round 3: Chain 1, then work one half double crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch. The fabric should now measure close to 1 inch tall. Count 30 stitches.
- Round 4: Chain 1, then work an increase in the next stitch, followed by one half double crochet in each of the next 4 stitches. Repeat this sequence around. You will have 36 stitches at the end of the round.
- Round 5: Chain 1, then work one half double crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch and count 36 stitches.
- Round 6: Chain 1, then work one bobble or cluster stitch in the next stitch, followed by one half double crochet in each of the next 5 stitches. Repeat around.
- Round 7: Chain 1, then work one half double crochet in each stitch around, placing one half double crochet in the top of each bobble. Join with a slip stitch. Count 36 stitches.
- Round 8: Chain 1, then repeat an invisible decrease followed by one half double crochet in each of the next 4 stitches. Repeat around for 30 stitches.
- Round 9: Chain 1, then repeat one decrease followed by one half double crochet in each of the next 3 stitches. Join with a slip stitch for 24 stitches.
- Round 10: Chain 1, then repeat one decrease followed by one half double crochet in each of the next 2 stitches. Join with a slip stitch for 18 stitches.
- Round 11: Chain 1, then repeat one decrease followed by one half double crochet in the next stitch. Join with a slip stitch for 12 stitches. Optionally add a pinch of polyester fiberfill now.
- Round 12: Chain 1, then work one decrease in each pair of stitches around, resulting in 6 stitches. Cut the yarn and pull the tail through the last loop. Weave through the remaining six stitches to close the opening.
- For the stem, attach the brown or dark green yarn to the center of the closed crown. Chain 5, then work one single crochet in the second chain from the hook and one single crochet in each remaining chain. Slip stitch back into the crown, cut the yarn, and weave in both ends.
- Weave in every remaining end on the wrong side, which is the inside of the hat. If needed, block it cold by shaping it over a small jar or rolled towel.
Notes
The hat is best used as a brief, supervised accessory for your cat. Remember that some cats may tolerate the hat for only a short time. Keep it away from small children and pets who may chew on it.
