A simple and soothing crochet project to create an adorable pumpkin, perfect for autumn decorations or gifts.

  • Total Time: 120 minutes

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight yarn (about 60 yards, 100% acrylic)
  • One H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Polyester fiberfill (about 1 to 2 ounces)
  • Yarn needle (rounded tip)
  • Scissors
  • One stitch marker (optional)
  • A small amount of brown worsted weight yarn (for the stem)

Instructions

  1. Make a magic ring, chain 1, and work 6 single crochet (sc) into the ring. Pull the yarn tail to close.
  2. Round 1: 6 sc.
  3. Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around (12 sc).
  4. Round 3: Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then 2 sc in the following stitch. Repeat around (18 sc).
  5. Round 4: Work 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, then 2 sc in the next stitch. Repeat around (24 sc).
  6. Round 5: Work 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches, then 2 sc in the next stitch. Repeat around (30 sc).
  7. Round 6: Work 1 sc in each stitch around (30 sc).
  8. Repeat Round 6 for Rounds 7 through 12, working 1 sc in each stitch around.
  9. Round 13: Work 1 sc in each of the next 3 stitches, then crochet the next 2 stitches together (24 sc).
  10. Round 14: Work 1 sc in each of the next 2 stitches, then crochet the next 2 stitches together (18 sc).
  11. Pause and fill the pumpkin until it feels softly firm.
  12. Round 15: Work 1 sc in the next stitch, then crochet the next 2 stitches together (12 sc).
  13. Round 16: Work the next 2 stitches together around (6 sc). Cut the yarn, leaving a tail about 10 inches long, and pull the tail through the final loop.
  14. Thread the yarn tail onto the yarn needle and weave it through the front loops of the remaining stitches, then pull to close the opening.
  15. To create pumpkin sections, pass the needle through the center bottom and up through the center top, wrapping the yarn around the outside at each ridge.
  16. For the stem, make a magic ring with brown yarn, chain 1, and work 6 sc into the ring. Work 1 sc in each stitch around for 2 rounds, then slip stitch in the next stitch to finish.
  17. Sew the stem to the top and weave in the remaining ends.

Notes

If there are any loose stitches or uneven ridges, gently pull back one round to find the missed stitch. Use gentle steam for freshening up if needed.
