Create small molded rocks with hidden treasures inside that fizz and reveal the treasures when vinegar is added. This hands-on craft is perfect for kids and combines imaginative play with a fun science demonstration.

Ingredients

  • Baking soda
  • Water
  • Vinegar
  • Food coloring (optional)
  • Small treasures to hide inside

Instructions

  1. Mix the base. Put baking soda in a bowl and add water gradually. Stir until the mixture is moldable and holds together when pressed. If it feels too wet, add a little more baking soda; if it crumbles, add a small amount of water.
  2. Add color if you like. Stir in food coloring until the mixture is evenly tinted. Start with a little color and add more gradually.
  3. Shape the rocks. Take a portion of the mixture and press it around a small treasure. Cover the treasure completely, then shape the outside into a rock.
  4. Let them dry. Set the rocks aside until they are completely dry. Larger or thicker rocks may need more drying time.
  5. Reveal or display. To make the rocks fizz, place one in a suitable tray or container and pour vinegar over it. Otherwise, display the dry rocks as decorations.

Notes

Choose small, sturdy treasures that can fit inside the rocks and supervise young children when using small objects that could pose a choking hazard. These rocks cannot be reused after the fizzing reaction.
