Ingredients
- 2 cups bubble solution, clear or lightly colored
- 2 tablespoons washable fluorescent tempera paint (bright yellow, pink, green or orange)
- 1 tablespoon clean water
- 1 medium mixing bowl, 5 to 6 cup capacity
- 1 measuring cup, 2 cup capacity
- 1 tablespoon measuring spoon
- 1 small silicone spatula or wooden spoon
- 4 bubble wands, 6 to 10 inches long
- 1 shallow tray, at least 12 inches wide
- 1 black light or UV flashlight (optional)
- 1 plastic tablecloth or washable drop cloth, at least 3 feet by 4 feet
- 4 old cotton towels or paper towels
- 2 pairs washable child-size art smocks or old shirts (optional)
- 1 roll painter’s tape, 1 inch wide (optional)
- 1 pair nitrile or waterproof household gloves (optional for adults with sensitive skin)
Instructions
- Spread the plastic tablecloth over the work surface and secure the corners with painter’s tape.
- Measure 2 cups bubble solution into the mixing bowl.
- Add 1 tablespoon clean water and stir with the spatula for about 10 seconds.
- Measure 2 tablespoons washable fluorescent tempera paint. Add it in two portions, stirring slowly after each one until the color looks even.
- If bubbles gather across the top, stop stirring and let the bowl sit for five minutes.
- Cover the bowl loosely and let it rest for 30 minutes.
- Test one wand by dipping it, lifting it straight up and blowing slowly through the opening.
- Check the color under the black light if using one. If the color looks too pale, add another teaspoon of fluorescent paint, stir gently and test again.
- Give each child a wand and show them the slow-breath method.
- Move the tray outside once everyone understands the motion. Keep the bowl low and stable.
- Pour unused solution into a sealed container if it has stayed clean. Wipe the tray and table with warm water, wash the wands with mild dish soap and rinse the bowl.
Notes
Fluorescent paint can stain porous surfaces even when labeled washable. Protect unfinished wood, rugs, and light upholstery. Keep the solution away from pets and food.
