Ingredients
- 12 pieces of white cardstock, each 2 inches by 2 1/2 inches
- 12 pieces of colored construction paper, each at least 3 inches by 3 inches (colors like orange, yellow, red, green, brown, purple, and blue)
- 1 sheet of cream cardstock, 8 inches by 10 inches
- 1 small bottle of washable white school glue, about 4 fluid ounces
- 1 set of washable markers, 8 to 12 colors (fine or medium tips)
- 1 pair of child-safe scissors (one pair per child if possible)
- 1 ruler, 12 inches long
- 1 pencil with eraser
- 1 glue brush, 1/2 inch wide (optional)
- 1 sheet of wax paper, about 12 inches by 18 inches
- 1 reusable table covering, about 2 feet by 3 feet
- 1 damp cotton cloth, about 8 inches by 8 inches
- 1 black fine-tip permanent marker (adult use only, optional)
Instructions
- Cover the table before you begin with a reusable mat or opened paper grocery bag.
- Set out the cream background, the 12 white cardstock pieces, and the colored paper, sorted by color.
- Draw a simple October shape on each colored scrap, keeping drawings smaller than 2 inches by 2 1/2 inches.
- Cut out the shapes with child-safe scissors, allowing for imperfect edges.
- Place one cut shape on each white cardstock base without gluing to experiment with arrangements.
- Brush or spread a thin layer of school glue across the back of one shape and press it onto the center of the cardstock base.
- Repeat the gluing process until you have decorated all 12 bases.
- Add a postage-style border with washable markers around each piece.
- Add small details to each stamp like leaf veins or ghost faces, leaving some white space.
- Arrange the 12 pieces on the cream cardstock in three rows of four, leaving about 1/4 inch between each.
- Glue the postage pieces onto the background one at a time.
- Let the collage dry flat on wax paper for 30 to 45 minutes.
- Make finishing touches like writing 'October' or a child's name on the collage if desired.
