A calming DIY project that combines water, shimmer, and color to create a mesmerizing sensory jar.

  • Total Time: 24 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 clear plastic bottle or wide-mouth jar, 16 fluid ounces, with a tight lid
  • 1 1/2 cups warm distilled water
  • 1 tablespoon clear water-based school glue or liquid hand soap
  • 1/4 teaspoon blue liquid food coloring
  • 1/8 teaspoon purple liquid food coloring
  • 1 teaspoon fine silver or holographic glitter
  • 1 teaspoon blue glitter or iridescent confetti glitter
  • 1 tablespoon small blue plastic sequins or star-shaped confetti (optional)
  • 1 small funnel, 1/2 inch opening
  • 1 wooden craft stick, 4 1/2 inches long
  • 1 measuring cup, 2-cup capacity
  • 1 set measuring spoons, including a 1/4-teaspoon and 1-teaspoon measure
  • 1 clean dish towel, at least 12 inches by 18 inches
  • 1 disposable table covering, at least 24 inches by 36 inches
  • 1 pair disposable nitrile or latex-free gloves
  • 1 roll waterproof clear adhesive tape, 1 inch wide
  • 1 small tube clear-drying craft adhesive, 1 fluid ounce
  • 1 small bowl, 1-cup capacity, for catching drips

Instructions

  1. Cover your table with the disposable covering, place the dish towel in the center, and set the jar on top.
  2. Wash the jar, lid, funnel, measuring cup, and craft stick with warm soapy water. Rinse them well and dry the outside of the jar completely.
  3. Pour 1 1/2 cups warm distilled water into the measuring cup.
  4. Stir in 1 tablespoon clear school glue with the wooden craft stick, and wait about 2 minutes.
  5. Add 1/4 teaspoon blue food coloring and 1/8 teaspoon purple food coloring, and stir gently for 20 to 30 seconds.
  6. Set the funnel into the jar opening and pour in the colored water, leaving about 1 inch of empty space at the top.
  7. Add 1 teaspoon fine silver or holographic glitter, 1 teaspoon blue glitter or iridescent confetti glitter, and 1 tablespoon small blue plastic sequins or star-shaped confetti if using them.
  8. Use the craft stick to stir the contents inside the jar for 10 to 15 seconds.
  9. Check the mixture's movement before sealing and adjust if necessary.
  10. Wipe the jar rim and inside of the lid with the clean dish towel, and spread a thin bead of clear-drying craft adhesive around the lid threads or inner rim.
  11. Screw the lid on firmly while the jar sits upright, wipe away any excess adhesive, then wrap waterproof clear adhesive tape around the lid seam.
  12. Set the sealed jar upright on the towel and leave it untouched for 12 to 24 hours.
  13. After 12 hours, check that the adhesive feels firm and no longer tacky.
  14. Once fully cured, turn the jar slowly over a sink or protected table and enjoy the movement.

Notes

Use this project with children age 3 and older only with close adult supervision. Food coloring can stain skin and clothing, so wear gloves and protect your workspace. Keep the jar out of direct sunlight to avoid fading.
