Ingredients
- 6 unfinished wooden ornaments, 3 to 4 inches tall, with hanging holes
- 2 fluid ounces dark navy acrylic craft paint
- 1 fluid ounce violet acrylic craft paint
- 1 fluid ounce medium blue acrylic craft paint
- 1 fluid ounce white acrylic craft paint
- 1 fluid ounce silver or pale blue acrylic craft paint (optional)
- 1 fluid ounce water in a small cup (for rinsing paint)
- 1 small bottle, 2 fluid ounces, water-based clear acrylic sealer
- 6 pieces of ribbon or cotton cord, each 8 inches long
- 1 small synthetic round paintbrush, size 4 or similar
- 1 small flat paintbrush, about 1/2 inch wide
- 1 old toothbrush or stiff detail brush, about 6 inches long
- 6 wooden toothpicks
- 1 paint palette or shallow recycled lid, about 6 inches wide
- 1 sheet of 220 grit sandpaper, about 3 by 4 inches
- 1 plastic table covering or reusable drop cloth, at least 24 by 36 inches
- 1 small cotton rag, about 12 by 12 inches
- 1 pair of disposable nitrile gloves (optional)
Instructions
- Cover the table with the drop cloth.
- Lightly sand the edges of the wooden ornaments with the 220 grit sandpaper.
- Wipe away the dust with the cotton rag.
- Paint the front of each ornament with a thin coat of dark navy acrylic paint using the flat brush.
- Let the first coat dry for about 20 to 30 minutes, then add a second thin coat.
- Allow the dark base to dry for another 30 minutes.
- Use the round brush to dab violet and blue onto random areas of each ornament.
- Add a faint veil of pale blue or white paint using a nearly dry brush.
- Use the round brush or toothpick to add small dots for stars.
- For scattered speckles, dip the old toothbrush in white paint and tap it above the ornament.
- Let the paint dry for 2 to 4 hours.
- Apply a thin layer of water-based clear acrylic sealer to the ornaments.
- Let the clear coat dry according to its label, then cure for 24 hours.
- Thread a piece of ribbon or cotton cord through each hanging hole and tie a knot or bow.
Notes
Use a dust mask while sanding and ensure proper ventilation while using spray sealer. Supervise children closely, especially with paint and sealing tasks.
