Ingredients
- 1 packet, or 1/4 ounce, unflavored powdered gelatine
- 1/2 cup cool water
- 1/2 cup hot water, heated to about 160°F
- 1 tablespoon clear corn syrup
- 2 drops liquid food coloring, in one or two colors
- 1 teaspoon white craft glue, for the hanging loop and small joins
- 1 clear silicone flower mold with 5 petal cavities, each about 2 inches wide
- 1 small silicone circle mold, about 1 inch wide (optional, for the flower center)
- 1 disposable measuring cup, 8 fluid ounces
- 1 small mixing bowl, at least 2 cups
- 1 measuring cup with a 1-cup capacity
- 1 set of measuring spoons
- 1 wooden craft stick or small silicone spatula
- 1 pair of small scissors
- 12 inches of clear nylon cord or thin ribbon
- 1 sheet of parchment paper, about 12 by 16 inches
- 1 clean baking sheet or tray, about 9 by 13 inches
- 1 disposable table covering or drop cloth, about 3 by 4 feet
- 1 pair of disposable nitrile gloves, optional but helpful
- 1 clean toothpick, for moving bubbles and spreading glue
- 1 small piece of removable tape, about 2 inches long
Instructions
- Cover your table with the 3-by-4-foot drop cloth, then place the parchment on the 9-by-13-inch tray.
- Place the silicone flower mold and the optional 1-inch circle mold on the parchment-lined tray.
- Pour 1/2 cup cool water into the 2-cup mixing bowl. Sprinkle the 1/4 ounce of powdered gelatine evenly across the surface and let it stand for 5 minutes.
- Heat 1/2 cup water until it reaches about 160°F. Carefully pour it into the softened gelatine and stir with the craft stick for about 2 minutes.
- Stir in 1 tablespoon of clear corn syrup until the mixture looks even.
- Add 2 drops of liquid food coloring and stir just until the color travels through the mixture.
- Use the disposable measuring cup to fill the five petal cavities to about 1/4 inch deep.
- Pour the remaining mixture into the 1-inch circle mold for the flower center.
- Leave the tray level and uncovered in a cool, dry place for at least 4 hours.
- Flex the silicone mold away from each petal to release them.
- Arrange the five petals in a circle on the parchment for planning.
- Place a tiny dot of white craft glue at the narrow end of each petal and press them together, setting the 1-inch center piece over the joins.
- Cut 12 inches of nylon cord or thin ribbon, fold it in half, and glue it under the top edge of the center piece.
- Leave the flower flat for 2 hours or until the center no longer shifts when touched.
- Peel away the tape, trim any visible cord ends, and wipe the measuring cup and tools with warm water.
Notes
Handle hot water carefully to avoid burns. Keep the suncatcher away from moisture and high heat to maintain its shape and color.
