Create beautiful faux geode Easter eggs using simple painting and glue techniques to achieve a geological look with ordinary wooden eggs.

  • Total Time: 1 hour 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • 3 unfinished wooden eggs, 2.5 inches tall each
  • 3 fluid ounces white acrylic craft paint
  • 1 fluid ounce lavender acrylic craft paint
  • 1 fluid ounce pale blue acrylic craft paint
  • 1 fluid ounce metallic gold acrylic craft paint
  • 1 fluid ounce clear-drying craft glue, such as Aleene's Tacky Glue
  • 1/4 cup fine decorative sand or colored craft sand
  • 1 tablespoon small iridescent craft glitter, optional
  • 1 pencil, standard size
  • 1 small flat paintbrush, 1/4 inch wide
  • 1 small detail paintbrush, 1/8 inch wide
  • 1 disposable paper plate, 9 inches wide
  • 1 small cup holding 4 fluid ounces of water for rinsing brushes
  • 6 paper towels, standard size
  • 1 plastic table covering or drop cloth, at least 2 feet by 3 feet
  • 1 pair disposable nitrile gloves, optional but helpful for glue and sand
  • 1 small lidded container, at least 8 fluid ounces, for catching extra sand

Instructions

  1. Cover the table with a drop cloth.
  2. Wipe each wooden egg with a dry paper towel to remove loose dust.
  3. Paint all three eggs with one thin coat of white acrylic paint using the flat brush.
  4. Let the first coat dry for 30 to 45 minutes. Add a second thin coat, then leave the eggs for another 45 to 60 minutes until they feel dry.
  5. Choose the face of each egg where you want the geode opening, and use the pencil to draw a loose oval shape.
  6. Paint a narrow lavender band inside the pencil shape with the detail brush, leaving a small white margin in a few places.
  7. Wait 20 to 30 minutes, then add a thin pale blue band just inside the lavender area.
  8. Brush a thin coat of clear-drying glue inside the blue band and across the center of the opening.
  9. Hold the egg over the paper plate and sprinkle fine decorative sand onto the wet glue.
  10. Gently press the sand with a gloved fingertip and add the optional iridescent glitter while the glue remains wet.
  11. Shake the extra sand into the lidded container and place the egg upright on a clean paper towel.
  12. Repeat the glue and sand process for the other two eggs, following the same basic pattern.
  13. Let the eggs dry undisturbed for 2 to 4 hours, then leave them overnight before handling them.
  14. Brush away loose grains with a dry detail brush, and optionally add a tiny touch of gold along one side of each lavender band.

Notes

Keep the work area away from food preparation and supervise children around small sand and glitter pieces. Ensure you clean brushes before the glue dries and avoid soaking the eggs in water.
