This little ghost pillow has a friendly shape and a soft fabric, perfect for seasonal decorating or as a gift. The project uses simple rows of double crochet, making it an easy, soothing craft to work on during quiet evenings.

Ingredients

  • About 330 yards of worsted weight yarn, weight 4 medium, in a soft acrylic or acrylic blend, using two 170-yard, 100 g skeins
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • About 3 ounces (85 g) of polyester fiberfill
  • Yarn needle with a large eye
  • Sharp scissors
  • One stitch marker (optional)
  • Tape measure
  • Small amount of black worsted weight yarn for the eyes and mouth

Instructions

  1. Chain 22 to start.
  2. Row 1: Make 1 double crochet in the third chain from the hook, then make 1 double crochet in each chain across. You will have 20 double crochet stitches.
  3. Row 2: Chain 2 and turn. Make 1 double crochet in each stitch across. You will have 20 double crochet stitches.
  4. Rows 3 through 18: Repeat Row 2 for 16 more rows.
  5. Row 19: Chain 2 and turn. Make 1 double crochet in the first 8 stitches, then make 2 double crochet in the next stitch for an increase. Make 1 double crochet in the next 2 stitches, then make 2 double crochet in the next stitch, followed by 1 double crochet in each remaining stitch. You will have 22 stitches.
  6. Row 20: Chain 2 and turn. Make 1 double crochet in each stitch across. You will have 22 double crochet stitches.
  7. Rows 21 through 24: Repeat Row 20 for 4 rows.
  8. Row 25: Chain 2 and turn. Make 1 double crochet in the first 5 stitches, then make a decrease across the next 2 stitches. Continue with 1 double crochet in the next 8 stitches, make another decrease across the next 2 stitches, and finish with 1 double crochet in each remaining stitch. You will have 20 stitches.
  9. Row 26: Chain 2 and turn. Make 1 double crochet in each stitch across for 20 stitches.
  10. Row 27: Chain 2 and turn. Make 1 double crochet in the first 4 stitches, make a decrease across the next 2 stitches, make 1 double crochet in the next 8 stitches, make a decrease across the next 2 stitches, and finish with 1 double crochet in the last 4 stitches. You will have 18 stitches.
  11. Row 28: Chain 2 and turn. Make 1 double crochet in each stitch across for 18 stitches.
  12. Row 29: Chain 2 and turn, make 1 double crochet in the first 3 stitches, make a decrease across the next 2 stitches, make 1 double crochet in the next 8 stitches, make a decrease across the next 2 stitches, and finish with 1 double crochet in the last 3 stitches. You will have 16 stitches.
  13. Row 30: Chain 2 and turn. Make 1 double crochet in each stitch across for 16 stitches. Fasten off, leaving a 12-inch tail for sewing.
  14. Make a second matching panel by repeating Rows 1 through 30.
  15. Lay the two panels together with the right sides facing outward.
  16. Use a yarn needle and the main yarn to sew around the sides and top, leaving the bottom open.
  17. Embroider two small oval eyes and a simple curved mouth with black yarn or use two small embroidered features made from the main yarn.
  18. Fill the ghost with polyester fiberfill in small handfuls, then sew the opening closed.
  19. Weave in the ends and trim the tail.
  20. Check the finished shape and gently smooth the edges with your fingers.

Notes

Small parts and long loose stitches can be unsafe for children under three, so use embroidered features rather than buttons or safety eyes if the pillow may reach a young child.
