Crystal Growing Activity

No reviews

This hands-on crystal-growing activity lets kids make jewel-like formations with everyday supplies and a little patience. It’s a fun choice for a rainy afternoon, a science-themed activity, or a supervised group project.

Ingredients

  • Salt or Sugar or Borax (1 base per jar)
  • Water (as needed)
  • Glass jars or bowls (1 for each base)
  • String (1 piece per jar)
  • Pencil or stick (1 per jar)

Instructions

  1. Choose a base. Select salt, sugar, or Borax. Do not mix the bases in the same solution.
  2. Make a concentrated solution. Dissolve your chosen base in hot water in a glass jar or bowl. Keep adding it until no more will dissolve. An adult should handle the hot water.
  3. Prepare the hanging string. Tie one end of the string to a pencil or stick.
  4. Suspend the string. Rest the pencil or stick across the top of the container so the string hangs in the solution. Adjust it so it does not touch the bottom.
  5. Leave the container undisturbed. Set it somewhere it can remain safely for several days. Avoid moving or shaking it while crystals form.
  6. Watch the crystals grow. As water evaporates, crystals may collect on the string. Check the container without disturbing it.
  7. Remove and dry the crystals. After a few days, lift out the string and let the crystals dry.

Notes

These crystals are not crochet fabric, so yarn washing, blocking, and fiber-care instructions do not apply. Keep the dried crystals in a dry place, away from moisture, which may affect them. Use adult supervision when preparing hot water or handling Borax.
