Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), about 45 yards total (pumpkin orange for the body, green for the stem, brown or black for optional details)
- One H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Polyester fiberfill, about 0.25 ounce (7 g)
- One yarn needle with a blunt tip
- Small scissors for trimming yarn tails
- One stitch marker (optional)
- One small keychain clasp or lobster clasp
- A small amount of green worsted weight yarn for the stem, about 3 yards
Instructions
- Make a magic ring and chain 1 to secure it.
- Work 6 single crochet stitches into the ring. Pull the yarn tail to close the center.
- Place a stitch marker in the first stitch of the round.
- For Round 2, work 2 single crochet stitches into each stitch around for a total of 12 stitches.
- For Round 3, work 1 single crochet in the first stitch, then 2 single crochet stitches in the next stitch, repeating around for 18 stitches.
- For Round 4, work 1 single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, then work 2 single crochet stitches in the next stitch, repeating around for 24 stitches.
- Work Rounds 5 through 9 evenly, with 1 single crochet in every stitch around (24 stitches each round).
- For Round 10, work 1 single crochet in each of the next 2 stitches, then single crochet the next 2 stitches together, for a total of 18 stitches.
- Begin adding small pinches of polyester fiberfill after Round 10, making sure it's springy and not packed tightly.
- For Round 11, work 1 single crochet in the next stitch, then single crochet the next 2 stitches together, for a total of 12 stitches.
- For Round 12, single crochet the next 2 stitches together around to finish with 6 stitches.
- Cut the orange yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail, and weave it through the front loops of the remaining 6 stitches to close the opening.
- Join green yarn for the stem with a slip stitch, chain 5, and slip stitch back down the chain.
- Attach the keychain clasp by making a small yarn loop through the stem area, or sew the clasp to a separate loop of yarn.
- Weave in the ends using the yarn needle, trimming as necessary.
Notes
This project is suitable for beginners and allows for imperfection, adding to its charm. Make sure to check the stitch count regularly to maintain the pumpkin shape.
