Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), acrylic, about 220 yards total
- Orange worsted weight yarn for the main body, about 180 yards
- Black worsted weight yarn for the edging and small details, about 40 yards
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Sharp scissors
- Two stitch markers (optional)
- Tape measure
- Two small, securely sewn buttons for the chest closure
Instructions
- With orange yarn, make a foundation chain of 32 stitches.
- Half double crochet across the chain, beginning in the third chain from the hook. You will have 30 half double crochet stitches at the end of Row 1.
- Chain 2 and turn. Work one half double crochet in each stitch across for 8 rows, checking that each row ends with 30 stitches.
- Begin shoulder shaping. Chain 2 and turn, then work 2 half double crochet in the first stitch, one in each stitch across, and 2 in the last stitch to have 32 stitches.
- For the next 3 rows, chain 2 and turn, then work one half double crochet in each stitch, maintaining 32 stitches.
- Shape the chest by chaining 2 and turning, working 2 half double crochet in the first stitch and one in each stitch across to the last stitch, and then 2 half double crochet in the last stitch to have 34 stitches. Work 3 more rows evenly with 34 stitches.
- Make the lower body section by chaining 2 and turning, working one half double crochet in each of the 34 stitches for 8 rows.
- Make the first side tab by chaining 2 and turning, then working one half double crochet in the first 8 stitches only. Turn and continue across those 8 stitches for 5 rows.
- Rejoin orange yarn at the opposite edge of the lower body and repeat the side tab construction.
- Join black yarn at the neck edge with a slip stitch. Work one round of single crochet around the neck edge and both side tabs.
- Sew one small button to the end of each side tab. Alternatively, create a short chain loop at each tab end for a button-free version.
- Try the costume on your dog for a few minutes to check the fit.
- Weave in the ends with a yarn needle.
- Lay the finished costume flat and gently shape it, blocking as needed.
Notes
Ensure the costume fits comfortably without restricting the dog's movement. This costume is not meant for sleeping or unsupervised play.
