A warm, oversized accessory made with simple half double crochet stitches and bold color changes, perfect for beginners and cold-weather wardrobes.

Ingredients

  • Bernat® Softee® Chunkyâ„¢ yarn: 5 balls of Contrast A, 3 balls of Contrast B
  • U.S. N/15 (10 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors

Instructions

  1. With Contrast A, chain 202 loosely. Keeping the chain relaxed is important because a tight foundation chain can pull the bottom edge inward.
  2. For the first row, which is the right side, work 1 half double crochet in the third chain from the hook.
  3. Work 1 half double crochet in each chain across to the end of the chain.
  4. Turn your work. You should have 200 half double crochet stitches.
  5. For the second row, chain 2.
  6. Work 1 half double crochet into the horizontal bar created below the stitch in the previous row.
  7. Repeat the horizontal-bar half double crochet across the row. Turn.
  8. Repeat the second-row stitch pattern for the remaining rows. Keep working into the horizontal bar below each stitch rather than the usual top loops.
  9. With Contrast A, work 4 rows in the established pattern.
  10. Break Contrast A and join Contrast B.
  11. With Contrast B, work 6 rows in the established pattern.
  12. Break Contrast B and join Contrast A.
  13. With Contrast A, work 6 rows in the established pattern.
  14. Fasten off.
  15. Cut both Contrast A and Contrast B into 20-inch lengths.
  16. Take 4 strands together.
  17. Knot the grouped strands evenly across one short end of the scarf.
  18. Repeat on the opposite short end.
  19. Trim the fringe evenly.

Notes

Choose colors with enough contrast to make the striped sections visible. For gifting, fold the scarf neatly and tie it with a simple ribbon. A small card listing the yarn-care instructions is a useful finishing touch.
