- Borax
- Pipe cleaners
- Boiling water
- Heat-safe jar
- Spoon
- String
- Pencil
Instructions
- Shape the pipe cleaners.
- Twist each pipe cleaner into your desired design. Try stars, hearts, circles, snowflakes, initials, or simple geometric shapes.
- Attach the string.
- Tie a length of string securely to each pipe cleaner shape. Leave enough string to suspend the shape inside the jar.
- Prepare the Borax solution.
- Boil the water carefully. Add approximately 3 tablespoons of Borax for every cup of water. Stir with a spoon until the Borax dissolves as much as possible.
- Fill the jar.
- Pour the hot Borax solution into the jar. Use a heat-safe container and handle the hot liquid carefully.
- Suspend the shapes.
- Tie the free end of each string to a pencil. Lay the pencil across the top of the jar so the pipe cleaner hangs inside the solution. Make sure the shape does not touch the bottom or sides of the jar.
- Leave the jar undisturbed.
- Let the jar sit for several hours or overnight. Avoid moving it while the crystals are forming.
- Remove and dry the shapes.
- Carefully lift the pipe cleaner shapes from the solution. Place them on a protected surface and allow the crystals to dry completely before displaying them.
Notes
Keep Borax and the hot solution away from children and pets. Do not use the jar for food afterward unless it has been thoroughly cleaned and is suitable for that purpose.
