Ingredients
- 5 fluid ounces white school glue, about two-thirds of a cup
- 1 cup white shaving cream, not gel
- 1 tablespoon unscented hand lotion
- 1 tablespoon white air-dry clay, torn into pieces smaller than 1 inch
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 teaspoons contact lens solution containing boric acid or borate
- 2 tablespoons warm water
- 1 medium mixing bowl, at least 6 cups in size
- 1 silicone spatula or sturdy plastic spoon, about 10 inches long
- 1 measuring cup with a 1-cup capacity
- 1 tablespoon measuring spoon
- 1 teaspoon measuring spoon
- 1 small cup, about 8 fluid ounces, for the baking soda mixture
- 1 washable table mat or plastic tablecloth, about 24 by 36 inches
- 1 pair disposable nitrile gloves, medium or large (optional)
- 1 airtight plastic container, about 16 fluid ounces, for storage
- 1 clean paper towel
Instructions
- Cover your table with a washable mat or plastic tablecloth before you open any ingredients.
- Pour 5 fluid ounces of white school glue into the mixing bowl.
- Add 1 cup of shaving cream and stir slowly with the spatula until the mixture looks pale, fluffy, and mostly even.
- Add 1 tablespoon of hand lotion and fold it through the mixture until you no longer see clear streaks of lotion.
- In the small cup, stir 1 teaspoon of baking soda into 2 tablespoons of warm water.
- Add the baking soda mixture to the bowl and stir for about 30 seconds.
- Add 1 teaspoon of contact lens solution and stir until the mixture begins to pull away from the bowl.
- Add the remaining contact lens solution in small drops, stirring between additions, until the slime gathers around the spatula.
- Lift the mixture with the spatula and place it on the covered work surface.
- Knead it with clean hands for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Tear the 1 tablespoon of air-dry clay into pieces smaller than 1 inch. Press one piece into the slime, fold the slime over it, and knead until the clay disappears. Continue with the remaining pieces.
- Keep kneading for 3 to 5 minutes until the surface becomes softer and less glossy.
- If the slime remains very sticky, add one or two drops of contact lens solution and knead again.
- Shape the butter slime into a loose ball and place it in the airtight container. Close the lid and let it rest for 30 to 60 minutes.
- After resting, open the container and knead the slime briefly. If it feels smooth and flexible, it is ready to use.
- Wipe the bowl, spatula, and table mat with a damp paper towel, then wash reusable tools with warm soapy water.
Notes
Keep slime away from children under 3 years old and supervise older children during the making process.
