Ingredients
- Borax — for making the crystal-growing solution
- Hot water — an adult should handle it and pour it carefully
- Pipe cleaners — bend these into the snowflake design
- A jar — choose one large enough to hold the snowflake without it touching the sides or bottom
- String — use it to hang the snowflake from the pencil
- Pencil — rest it across the top of the jar to suspend the snowflake
Instructions
- Shape the pipe cleaners. Bend the pipe cleaners into a snowflake design. Aim for a balanced shape with branches that fit inside the jar.
- Prepare the saturated solution. Pour hot water into the jar, then stir in borax. Continue adding borax until no more dissolves and the solution is saturated.
- Tie on the string. Secure one end of the string to the pipe-cleaner snowflake. Tie the other end around the middle of a pencil.
- Suspend the snowflake. Place the pencil across the top of the jar and lower the snowflake into the solution. Check that it is fully submerged but does not touch the bottom or sides.
- Leave the jar undisturbed. Set the jar in a safe location for several hours or overnight while crystals form.
- Check the result after the resting period. Carefully remove the snowflake.
Notes
The finished decoration should be kept away from young children and pets. Do not wash the snowflake or use it for food.
