Ingredients
- Gum base
- Corn syrup
- Powdered sugar
- Flavoring, such as vanilla or fruit flavoring
- Food coloring
- A bowl
- A spoon
- Plastic wrap
Instructions
- Combine the gum base and corn syrup. Place both in a bowl and mix well with a spoon until the mixture becomes pliable. If your gum base packaging gives specific preparation instructions, follow those directions.
- Add powdered sugar gradually. Sprinkle in a little powdered sugar at a time, mixing between additions. Continue until the gum thickens and is no longer sticky. Adding it gradually makes it easier to judge the texture and helps prevent the mixture from becoming too dry.
- Mix in flavor and color. Add your desired flavoring and a small amount of food coloring. Mix until the color and flavor are distributed as evenly as possible. Start with a modest amount of coloring, then add more if you want a deeper shade.
- Knead until smooth. With clean hands, knead the mixture for a few minutes. Fold and press it repeatedly until it feels smooth and evenly combined. If it is still sticky, add a little more powdered sugar rather than a large amount at once.
- Shape the gum. Roll the mixture into small balls, or flatten it and cut it into pieces. Aim for pieces that are easy to handle and similar in size. The instructions do not specify a particular shape or portion size, so choose what works for your group.
- Wrap and let it set. Wrap each piece, or the shaped batch, in plastic wrap. Let the gum set for a little while before enjoying it. Keep it wrapped when not in use.
Notes
Use food-grade ingredients intended for making gum. Check the gum base packaging for handling instructions, including whether it needs to be softened or warmed before mixing. Keep the bowl and spoon clean, and wash your hands before kneading the mixture.
