A simple sensory activity for kids using baking soda and vinegar to create treasure rocks with hidden gems or coins inside.

  • Total Time: 25 minutes

Ingredients

  • Baking soda – 1 cup (approximately)
  • Vinegar – 1 cup (approximately)
  • Small gems or coins – 1 per rock
  • Plastic mold or container – as needed to hold the mixture
  • Mixing bowl – 1 for combining ingredients

Instructions

  1. Combine the baking soda and vinegar in a mixing bowl, being careful to add the vinegar slowly to manage the fizzing.
  2. Wait for the fizzing to subside before adding the treasure.
  3. Add the small gem or coin into the mixture.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a plastic mold or container while working over a wipeable surface.
  5. Let the mixture harden undisturbed until it is completely dry.
  6. Carefully remove the dried treasure rock from the mold.
  7. Let the child explore the dried rock and find the hidden gem or coin, supervising closely throughout the activity.

Notes

Keep small treasures away from children who may swallow them and supervise closely during the activity.
