These little ghosts are handmade spirits for a mantel, porch table, or autumn gathering, created using basic crochet stitches and a calm, repetitive rhythm.

  • Total Time: 60 minutes

Ingredients

  • About 110 yards of white worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium)

  • One stitch marker (optional)
  • Tape measure
  • One small battery-operated LED tea light (optional)
  • Two small black safety eyes or black yarn for embroidery

  1. Make a magic ring, chain 1, then work 6 single crochet stitches (sc) into the ring.
  2. Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around (12 stitches).
  3. Round 3: Chain 1, work 1 sc in first stitch, then 2 sc in next stitch, repeat around (18 stitches).
  4. Round 4: Chain 1, then work 1 sc in each of the first 2 stitches, then 2 sc in the next stitch, repeat around (24 stitches).

  8. Round 8: Chain 2, work 1 hdc in first 3 stitches, then 2 hdc in the next stitch, repeat around (30 stitches).
  9. Rounds 9 through 12: Chain 2, work 1 hdc in each stitch around (30 stitches).
  10. Round 13: Chain 1, work 1 sc in each stitch around (30 stitches).
  11. Round 14: Chain 1, skip 1 stitch, work 5 double crochet (dc) in the next stitch, skip 1 stitch, and slip stitch in the next stitch, repeat around.
  12. Cut the yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail. If desired, add a small amount of polyester fiberfill through the base.
  13. Weave in the ends using a yarn needle. Embroider a face or attach safety eyes.

Notes

Avoid hot iron or heat sources with acrylic yarn; use steam if necessary. Store ghosts flat or loosely to maintain shape.
