Ingredients
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 2 cups cornstarch
- 1 cup light vegetable oil
- 1 teaspoon powdered tempera paint or 1 teaspoon washable dry pigment (optional for color)
- 1 large mixing bowl (at least 8-cup capacity)
- 1 sturdy wooden spoon or silicone spatula (10 to 12 inches long)
- 1 set of dry measuring cups
- 1 set of measuring spoons
- 1 shallow plastic tray or baking pan (about 9 by 13 inches)
- 1 large sheet of parchment paper (about 12 by 16 inches, optional)
- 1 pair of disposable food-safe gloves (optional for colored batches)
- 1 airtight plastic container (at least 6-cup capacity)
- 1 small hand broom or soft brush (optional for cleanup)
- 1 damp cotton cloth (about 12 by 12 inches)
Instructions
- Cover your table before you begin.
- Set the parchment paper on the tray and place the bowl, measuring cups, and spoon within reach.
- Measure 2 cups of all-purpose flour and 2 cups of cornstarch into the mixing bowl.
- Stir the dry ingredients for about 1 minute to mix evenly.
- Add 1 cup of vegetable oil slowly, pouring in about 1/4 cup at a time and stirring after each addition.
- Continue stirring until the mixture looks like soft, slightly damp crumbs.
- If desired, add 1 teaspoon of powdered tempera paint or dry pigment and stir it in thoroughly.
- Test the texture by squeezing a small handful. It should hold together and then break apart when rubbed.
- Turn the mixture onto the lined tray and spread it out into an even layer, creating shapes with your fingers or spoon.
- Let colored moon sand sit uncovered for 2 to 4 hours before storing it for moisture to evaporate.
