This crochet mesh cardigan is a lightweight, open-front layer featuring an airy texture and a feminine V-neckline created by an X-stitch pattern. It’s perfect for layering over various outfits and provides a relaxing crochet experience.

Ingredients

  • Bernat® Softee Cottonâ„¢ yarn in Fuchsia (quantity unspecified)
  • Susan Bates® Silvalume® crochet hook, U.S. E/4 (1)
  • Susan Bates® Silvalume® crochet hook, U.S. G/6 (1)
  • Susan Bates® steel yarn needle (1)

Instructions

  1. Make the foundation chain.
  2. Using the U.S. E/4 hook, create a foundation chain of 175 stitches. Keep the chain relaxed rather than pulling the yarn tightly.
  3. Work the first row.
  4. Work one row of half double crochet (hdc) across the foundation chain.
  5. Change to the larger hook.
  6. Switch to the U.S. G/6 hook after completing the first row. Begin working the X-stitch mesh pattern according to the pattern instructions.
  7. Check the measurement.
  8. Measure the crocheted piece as you work. It should reach 12 inches at the specified point.
  9. Shape the right front and V-neck.
  10. Follow the pattern’s shaping instructions for the right front. Separate the stitches as directed to create the V-neckline.
  11. Create the sleeves.
  12. Crochet the sleeves using the specified stitches and hook changes.
  13. Assemble the cardigan.
  14. Lay the crocheted pieces flat and align the edges. Sew the shoulders together according to the pattern instructions. Attach the sleeves carefully.
  15. Add the neck and front edging.
  16. Finish the neckline and front edges as instructed. Work evenly around the edges.
  17. Finish the ends.
  18. Weave in all yarn tails securely on the wrong side of the cardigan.

Notes

The cardigan construction makes it suitable for relaxed weekend crochet and can be a thoughtful gift when customized to the recipient’s preferences.
