A simple, hands-on sensory activity that gives children room for imaginative farm play using homemade dough.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1 cup water
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Cocoa powder, as desired for a muddy brown color
  • Optional food coloring
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Spoon or spatula for stirring
  • Clean work surface for kneading

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry ingredients. Add the flour and salt to a large bowl. Stir until they are evenly blended.
  2. Add the liquid ingredients slowly. Gradually pour in the water while stirring. Add the vegetable oil and continue mixing.
  3. Add color if desired. For a more realistic mud appearance, mix in cocoa powder. You can also add a few drops of food coloring for a different shade.
  4. Check the consistency. Continue stirring until the mixture forms a soft, doughy mass. If it feels too dry, add a small amount of water. If it feels too sticky, work in a little more flour.
  5. Knead the dough. Transfer it to a clean surface and knead until it becomes smooth and evenly mixed.
  6. Set up the play area. Place the dough on a washable mat, tray, or table. Add toy farm animals, tractors, fences, or other play accessories.
  7. Start imaginative play. Use the dough to make pretend mud puddles, farm tracks, hills, animal habitats, and other small-world scenes.

Notes

Adult supervision is recommended, especially with younger children. This dough is intended for play and should not be eaten.
