Ingredients
- Yarn: Worsted weight (weight 4, medium), approximately 240 yards (220 m) total
- Hook size: I-9 (5.5 mm)
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Scissors
- Tape measure
- Stitch markers (optional)
Instructions
- Begin with the magic ring: Form a magic ring (also known as a magic circle) and secure it.
- First round: Chain 2 (this counts as your first double crochet), then make 11 double crochets (dc) into the ring. Pull the tail to close the ring neatly. Your count should total 12 stitches.
- Join the round: Slip stitch (sl st) to the top of the first dc to join the round. Insert your hook under both loops to ensure a tight join.
- Second round: Chain 2, then into each stitch, make 2 double crochet (dc) to increase. You should have 24 stitches now.
- Third round: Chain 2, 1 dc in the first stitch, then 2 dc in the next stitch. Repeat until the end of the round to have 36 stitches.
- Fourth round: Chain 2, 2 dc in the first stitch, then 1 dc in the next 2 stitches. Repeat to finish with 48 stitches.
- Fifth round: Chain 2, 1 dc in the first 3 stitches, then 2 dc in the next stitch. Continue to complete the round with 60 stitches.
- Sixth round: Chain 2, 1 dc in the first 4 stitches, then 2 dc in the next stitch. Complete this round, totaling 72 stitches.
- Seventh round: For each stitch group, dc in the first 5 stitches and increase on the sixth to give you 84 stitches.
- Create the pumpkin shape: Once you reach your desired height (approximately 8 inches or 20 cm), switch to working in back loop only (BLO) for the last round.
- Finishing your creation: Decrease your stitches evenly to create the top, following a sequence of 1 dc in the first 5 stitches, and then a decrease.
- Final touches: When reducing down to 12 stitches, fasten off and weave in your ends carefully.
- Adding embellishments: If desired, attach small leaves or a stem using extra yarn.
- Blocking (optional): Lightly block the pumpkin for a beautiful finish.
