Ingredients
- 1 cup coarse white decorating sugar (sanding sugar or large-grain sugar)
- 1 small bottle or glass jar (3 inches tall and 2 inches wide, with a lid)
- 1/8 teaspoon pink gel food coloring
- 1 teaspoon clear-drying craft glue (such as Mod Podge, for the paper label)
- 1 sheet white cardstock (8.5 by 11 inches)
- 1 piece parchment paper (12 by 16 inches)
- 1 small mixing bowl (2-cup capacity)
- 1 teaspoon measuring spoon
- 1 small silicone spatula or teaspoon
- 1 small baking sheet (about 10 by 15 inches)
- 1 pair small scissors (4 to 6 inches long)
- 1 fine-tip black marker (water-based)
- 1 pair disposable nitrile gloves (medium size, optional for keeping fingers clean)
- 1 clean kitchen towel (at least 12 inches square)
- 1 small piece painter’s tape (about 6 inches long, optional for holding parchment in place)
Instructions
- Wash and dry the jar, lid, bowl, spatula, and baking sheet.
- Cut the parchment to fit the baking sheet, leaving it flat with no tall folds.
- Measure 1 cup of coarse white decorating sugar into the bowl.
- Add 1/8 teaspoon of pink gel food coloring to the sugar and stir slowly for 2 to 3 minutes.
- Spread the tinted sugar over the parchment in a thin layer, about 1/8 inch thick.
- Let the sugar sit uncovered for 6 to 8 hours, or overnight, in a dry spot away from direct sunlight.
- Check the texture with a clean fingertip; the sugar should feel dry and loose.
- While the sugar dries, cut a cardstock label about 1.5 by 2 inches and write 'Pink Sugar Crystals' in the center.
- Brush a very thin layer of clear-drying craft glue on the back of the label and press it onto the front of the dry jar.
- Pour the completely dry crystals into the jar, tap gently to settle the sugar, and leave about 1/4 inch of space below the lid.
- Close the lid and let the glue on the label dry for 1 hour before moving the jar.
Notes
Keep the sugar and craft glue away from very young children and pets, and ensure the final product is decorative and not food-safe due to craft materials.
