This pom pom otter is a charming yarn animal craft made by shaping and layering soft brown pom poms. It is simple enough for beginners, relaxing to assemble, and a sweet project for children’s rooms, woodland-themed décor, party favors, or handmade gifts.

Ingredients

  • Brown yarn
  • Scissors
  • Pom pom maker
  • Fabric glue
  • Felt for the eyes, nose, and mouth
  • Googly eyes

Instructions

  1. Make the body pom poms by using the pom pom maker to create several pom poms from brown yarn, ensuring these are the largest pom poms in the project for the otter’s body.
  2. Create additional, smaller brown pom poms for the otter’s face and tail, keeping the sizes visibly smaller than the body pieces.
  3. Trim the pom poms using sharp scissors to carefully trim uneven strands, rotating each pom pom as you cut to make it rounded rather than flat.
  4. Assemble the body by arranging the largest pom poms first, applying fabric glue between the pieces, and pressing them together gently, before adding the smaller face and tail pom poms.
  5. Cut small felt shapes for the otter’s eyes, nose, and mouth, keeping the pieces simple and slightly oversized.
  6. Glue on the facial details by applying a small amount of fabric glue to the felt pieces and attaching them to the face, pressing gently.
  7. Attach the googly eyes to give the otter a lively expression, checking their alignment before the glue sets.
  8. Let the otter dry completely by placing it on a flat surface and allowing the glue to dry fully before moving or displaying it.

Notes

Each pom pom is trimmed by hand, so small differences give every animal its own personality. Keep the item away from babies and toddlers if the googly eyes or other small parts could become loose. Use glue sparingly to avoid soaking into the yarn.
