Create charming pumpkin decorations from pony beads and elastic cord. This easy craft is perfect for a cozy afternoon and can be used as garland, gift toppers, or mantel decorations.

  • Total Time: 780 minutes

Ingredients

  • 30 orange pony beads, 9 millimeters each
  • 6 black pony beads, 9 millimeters each (for the face or accent, optional)
  • 2 green pony beads, 9 millimeters each (for the stem and leaf)
  • 36 inches of 1 millimeter elastic craft cord
  • 1 teaspoon of clear-drying craft glue
  • 1 pair of small scissors
  • 1 small ruler, 6 inches or longer
  • 1 shallow tray or bowl, 4 inches wide or larger
  • 1 sheet of scrap paper, 8.5 by 11 inches
  • 1 table covering, at least 24 by 24 inches
  • 1 small cloth or paper towel, at least 8 by 10 inches

Instructions

  1. Cover your table before you open the bead container.
  2. Set out the table covering, tray, ruler, scissors, cord, beads, glue, and cloth.
  3. Cut one 36 inch length of elastic cord and run your fingers along it to find any rough spots.
  4. Place the beads in the pumpkin pattern: six beads in the first row, eight in the second, ten in the third and fourth, and four for the bottom stem and leaf area.
  5. Hold the center of the cord and bring both ends together, threading the first row of six beads onto both cord ends at once.
  6. Build the second row by threading four beads onto each cord end and cross the cord ends through the last bead on the opposite side.
  7. Repeat the crossing motion for the third and fourth rows, using five beads on each side.
  8. Add the lower narrowing row with four orange beads, then cross the cord ends through the center bead if your pattern has one.
  9. Add the green beads at the top or bottom as a small stem and leaf.
  10. Inspect the pumpkin and adjust the beads as needed.
  11. Tie two firm overhand knots with the cord ends.
  12. Trim the cord ends to about 1/4 inch, leaving enough length for the knot to stay secure.
  13. Place a tiny drop of clear-drying craft glue on the knot.
  14. Set the pumpkin flat on the scrap paper and leave it alone for 12 hours of dry time.
  15. After the glue dries, brush away any stray glue threads and trim any remaining cord tail if needed.

Notes

Pony beads are small and can present a choking hazard. Supervise children closely and keep loose beads away from children under 3 years old. Use scissors carefully and craft glue in a ventilated area.
