A cozy hat crochet pattern that is perfect for little ones or a playful gift for family and friends. This beginner-friendly project allows you to enjoy the soothing rhythm of crocheting while creating a heartwarming accessory.

  • Total Time: 360 minutes

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight (weight 4, medium) yarn: about 200 yards (183 m)
  • Hook size: I-9 (5.5 mm)
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Scissors
  • Stitch markers (optional)
  • Tape measure

Instructions

  1. Begin by making a magic ring, to which you will later crochet all your stitches.
  2. Chain 2 (this acts as the first turning chain) and then work 12 double crochet (dc) into the magic ring. Pull the ring tight to close it, and secure with a slip stitch (sl st) into the top of the turning chain. You should have 12 dc, counting the chain as the first stitch.
  3. For the second round, chain 2 to start, and this time, work 2 dc in each stitch around. You will have a total of 24 dc at the end of this round. Remember to secure with a sl st into the top of the turning chain.
  4. In the third round, chain 2. Work 1 dc in the first stitch, and then in the next stitch, work 2 dc. Repeat around, increasing for a total of 36 dc at the end of this round. Close with a sl st.
  5. In the fourth round, chain 2, and this time, work 1 dc in the first two stitches followed by 2 dc in the next. Repeat this pattern, resulting in 48 dc by the end of the round. Slip stitch to finish.
  6. Continue with rounds 5 to 10. For each round, maintain the pattern: chain 2, and then dc without increasing. Simply complete 48 dc for each of those rounds. This will create the height of the hat.
  7. After finishing the height, switch to back loop only (BLO) for rounds 11 to 15 to create the brim.
  8. Finally, yarn over and slip stitch to finish your final round. Weave in any ends snugly so they do not unravel. Smooth out the seams gently with your fingers.
  9. If you notice any mistakes, gently pull back rows to correct them.
  10. After weaving in your ends, consider blocking your hat if you’re using fibers that benefit from it.
  11. Lay the hat flat to dry, shaping it gently.

Notes

This pattern is best suited for beginners but offers enough challenge to keep intermediates engaged. You can personalize your hat by experimenting with colors or stitch types as you gain confidence.
