Ingredients
- Worsted weight (weight 4, medium) yarn: About 480 yards (440 m) total, preferably in autumn colors or Halloween-themed shades. Aim for two skeins of 100 grams (about 3.5 ounces) each.
- Hook size: I-9 (5.5 mm)
- Yarn needle: for weaving in ends
- Scissors: for clean cuts
- Stitch markers: optional, to keep track of rounds
- Tape measure: essential to check gauge
Instructions
- Start with a magic ring (also called a magic circle). Make sure it’s snug, but not too tight to work into later.
- Chain 2. This acts as your turning chain for the first round.
- Work 12 double crochets (dc) into the magic ring. Pull the tail tight to close the ring. You should now have 12 stitches total.
- Join with a slip stitch (sl st) to the top of the turning chain to close the round.
- For the next round, chain 2. In the same stitch, make 1 dc, then increase in each of the next 11 dc by working 2 dc in each stitch. At the end of this round, you should have a total of 24 stitches.
- Join with a sl st to the top of the turning chain.
- Chain 2 and start the next round. Work 1 dc in the first stitch, then in the next stitch make 2 dc (increase). Repeat this sequence: 1 dc, 2 dc, all the way around. You will finish with 36 stitches.
- Continue this pattern, increasing each round until you reach a size you like—or until you have used all of your yarn.
- Once you have reached your desired size, cut the yarn leaving a 6-inch (15 cm) tail and pull it through the last loop to secure it.
- Weave in all the ends with your yarn needle.
Notes
If using acrylic, you might want to wash and block your piece lightly to set the stitches and give it a polished look.
