Create a calming sensory experience for children by making Rainbow Clean Mud, a soft and tactile material that invites hours of imaginative play.

  • Total Time: 45 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 large plastic storage bin, about 12 inches long by 8 inches wide by 4 inches deep, with a lid
  • 1 pound of white shredded paper, torn into pieces about 1/2 inch wide
  • 6 cups baking soda
  • 1 1/2 cups mild white liquid soap
  • 6 small bowls, each holding at least 2 cups
  • 1 large mixing bowl, at least 12 cups
  • 1 measuring cup, 1 cup size
  • 1 measuring spoon set
  • 1 large silicone spatula or sturdy wooden spoon
  • 6 food-coloring shades, about 1/4 teaspoon of each color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple)
  • 1 pair disposable nitrile or vinyl gloves (optional)
  • 1 washable tablecloth or plastic drop cloth, at least 3 feet by 3 feet
  • 1 roll paper towels
  • 1 small scoop, about 2 to 3 inches wide (optional)
  • 2 to 4 small plastic cups or measuring cups, 2 to 4 fluid ounces each (optional)

Instructions

  1. Cover the table with the washable cloth or plastic drop cloth.
  2. Tear the white paper into pieces about 1/2 inch wide.
  3. Add the torn paper and baking soda to the large mixing bowl and stir slowly.
  4. Pour in the liquid soap gradually, stirring after each pour.
  5. Check the texture by picking up a small handful; adjust with soap or paper as needed.
  6. Divide the mixture evenly into the six small bowls.
  7. Add food coloring to each bowl and knead until mostly even.
  8. Let the portions rest uncovered for 10 to 15 minutes.
  9. Adjust the texture of each portion if needed before moving on.
  10. Transfer the colored portions into the storage bin in order.
  11. Add play tools and any optional items like plastic animals.

Notes

Keep the finished sensory bin away from mouths, eyes, pets, and supervise children during play. Food coloring can stain, so protect surfaces and clothing.
