Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn, weight 4 medium, acrylic, about 180 total yards (165 m), green for the hat, small amounts of white, black, and darker green for details (1 skein of 200 yards per 5 ounces)
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook (or a half size up or down based on tension)
- Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Sharp scissors
- Tape measure for checking head size and gauge
- Stitch marker, optional
- Small amount of polyester fiberfill for raised eye pieces
- Small scrap of black yarn for embroidered pupils and smile
Instructions
- Make a magic ring, chain 2, and work 10 half double crochet (hdc) into the ring. Pull the ring closed and join with a slip stitch (sl st) to the first hdc.
- Chain 2; work 2 hdc in each stitch around. Join with a sl st.
- Chain 2; repeat 1 hdc in the next stitch and 2 hdc in the following stitch around. Join with a sl st.
- Chain 2; repeat 1 hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, then 2 hdc in the next stitch around. Join with a sl st.
- Chain 2; repeat 1 hdc in each of the next 3 stitches, then 2 hdc in the next stitch around. Join with a sl st.
- Chain 2; work 1 hdc in every stitch around for 4 rounds. Join each round with a sl st.
- Change to single crochet (sc); chain 1, work 1 sc in every stitch around, and join with a sl st.
- Work 2 more rounds of sc, joining at the end of each round. Check the fit before adding eyes.
- Make each eye with a magic ring; chain 1, work 8 sc into the ring, and join with a sl st. Repeat to create rounds and join until desired size.
- Place a small pinch of polyester fiberfill behind the eye circle, close it with a yarn needle, and sew securely onto the hat.
- Embroider pupils with black yarn, and optionally add a smile.
- Finish the hat by cutting the yarn, weaving in ends, and blocking gently if necessary.
Notes
Always ensure the hat fits comfortably on the dog and is not worn unsupervised. Make adjustments to size as needed for the specific dog.
