This tin can wind chime is a creative STEM activity that turns everyday recycling into outdoor décor, combining decorating, simple construction, and the science of sound.

Ingredients

  • Upcycled metal cans
  • Hanging string or wire
  • A drill or hammer and nails
  • Paint
  • Permanent markers
  • Beads
  • Brushes
  • Decorative cord or other weather-resistant embellishments
  • A sturdy branch or hanger for mounting

Instructions

  1. Clean the cans by washing each can thoroughly and removing the labels. Let the cans dry completely.
  2. Check the edges carefully to inspect for sharp metal. An adult should supervise this step and handle any necessary safety adjustments.
  3. Make the hanging holes by using a drill or a hammer and nail to create a hole in the bottom of each can.
  4. Decorate the cans using paint or permanent markers. Allow paint to dry fully before continuing.
  5. Cut pieces of string or wire to the lengths you want.
  6. Thread one piece of string or wire through the hole in each can, leaving enough material above for tying.
  7. Secure the ends by tying the string firmly or twisting the wire securely.
  8. Attach the cans to a sturdy branch or hanger, spacing them so they have room to move.
  9. Hang the wind chime in a place exposed to a gentle breeze.

Notes

Use clean cans with no sharp exposed edges. Choose strong string or wire if the wind chime will hang outdoors. Adults should handle drilling or hammering, and protective gloves and eye protection are sensible safety precautions.
