Create a playful shark-shaped gelatin treat that’s perfect for summer gatherings or simply to enjoy at home.

  • Total Time: 360 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 food-safe shark-shaped gelatin mold, about 6 inches long and 3 inches wide
  • 1 small box fruit-flavored gelatin, 3 ounces, blue or blue-green
  • 2 packets unflavored gelatin, 0.25 ounces each
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup cold water
  • 1 cup clear or pale fruit juice, divided into two 1/2-cup portions
  • 1 tablespoon granulated sugar, optional for a sweeter clear layer
  • 1 teaspoon neutral cooking oil, for lightly coating the mold
  • 1 medium heat-safe measuring cup, at least 2 cups
  • 1 small saucepan, 1-quart size
  • 1 wooden spoon or silicone spatula, 10 to 12 inches long
  • 1 liquid measuring cup, 1-cup size
  • 1 teaspoon measuring spoon
  • 1 refrigerator-safe tray, at least 8 inches long
  • 1 clean pastry brush, 1-inch wide, for the oil
  • 1 clean kitchen towel, 16 by 24 inches, for gripping the mold
  • 1 roll plastic wrap, at least 12 inches wide, for covering the mold
  • 1 pair food-safe disposable gloves, optional for handling the unmolded shape

Instructions

  1. Cover the work surface with a clean kitchen towel or a washable mat.
  2. Wash the shark mold, measuring cup, saucepan, spoon, and tray with warm soapy water. Rinse well and dry completely.
  3. Set the mold on the refrigerator-safe tray. Brush the inside with a very thin coat of neutral cooking oil.
  4. Make the blue layer by placing the blue gelatin in the heat-safe measuring cup. Add 1/2 cup boiling water and stir until clear.
  5. Stir in 1/2 cup cold water and let the mixture cool for about 10 minutes.
  6. Pour the blue gelatin slowly into the shark mold until it is about halfway full.
  7. Cover the mold loosely with plastic wrap and chill for 2 to 3 hours.
  8. Prepare the clear mixture by sprinkling unflavored gelatin over 1/2 cup cold fruit juice in the saucepan. Let it sit for 5 minutes.
  9. Warm the saucepan over low heat, stirring until the gelatin dissolves. Add the remaining 1/2 cup fruit juice and optional sugar, and stir until smooth.
  10. Let the clear mixture cool for 15 to 20 minutes.
  11. Remove the mold from the refrigerator and gently pour the clear mixture over the back of a spoon into the mold.
  12. Cover the mold and chill the completed shark for at least 4 hours, or overnight for the easiest release.
  13. To unmold, remove the plastic wrap and place a serving plate over the mold. Turn both over together and warm the outside of the mold with a clean towel dipped in warm water.
  14. Wait 10 seconds, lift one edge gently, and let the shark loosen on its own.
  15. Serve the Shark Jell-O soon after unmolding.

Notes

This project is best enjoyed fresh, and can be served with fruit. Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator for up to 2-3 days.
