Ingredients
- 2 packages of blue gelatin dessert mix, 3 ounces each
- 2 cups boiling water
- 1 cup cold water
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 6 clear plastic cups, 8 fluid ounces each
- 6 small food-safe gummy sharks
- 12 small food-safe gummy fish or candy sea creatures (optional)
- 2 tablespoons edible blue decorating sugar (optional)
- 1 large heat-safe measuring cup, at least 4 cups
- 1 medium mixing bowl, at least 2 quarts
- 1 wooden spoon or silicone spatula
- 1 small spoon, for nudging decorations
- 1 rimmed baking sheet, large enough to hold all 6 cups
- 1 refrigerator shelf with enough room for the baking sheet
- 6 small squares of plastic wrap, about 5 inches by 5 inches each
- 1 clean kitchen towel, for wiping spills
- 1 pair of food-safe disposable gloves (optional)
Instructions
- Cover your work surface before you begin.
- Set the rimmed baking sheet on the table and place the 6 clear cups inside it.
- Open the 2 packages of blue gelatin dessert mix and pour them into the mixing bowl.
- Add the 2 cups of boiling water, then stir with the wooden spoon for about 2 minutes until the powder is completely dissolved.
- Pour in the 1 cup of cold water and add the 1 cup of ice cubes, stirring gently for 1 minute.
- Pour about 1/3 cup of blue gelatin into each of the 6 cups.
- Add 1/2 teaspoon of edible blue decorating sugar to each cup if desired.
- Slide the baking sheet into the refrigerator and chill the first layer for 20 to 30 minutes.
- Take the tray out and place 1 gummy shark and 2 small gummy fish into each cup.
- Pour the remaining blue gelatin slowly into each cup, stopping about 1/2 inch below the rim.
- Tap each cup against the baking sheet to eliminate bubbles and use the spoon tip to guide any large bubbles upward.
- Cover each cup with one square of plastic wrap and return the baking sheet to the refrigerator.
- Chill for 3 to 4 hours until centers feel firm.
- Remove plastic wrap, wipe condensation from the outside with the kitchen towel, and serve cold.
Notes
Use adult help for boiling water. Children ages 6 and up can help with decoration placement.
