No reviews

Engage your children with these fun and educational chemistry experiments that demonstrate basic chemical reactions using common household materials. Perfect for rainy days or as a homeschooling lesson.

  • Total Time: 40 minutes

Ingredients

  • Baking soda
  • White vinegar
  • Water
  • Food coloring
  • Dish soap
  • Vegetable oil
  • Clear cups or jars
  • Small bowls
  • Spoons
  • Measuring cups and measuring spoons
  • Ice cubes
  • Balloons
  • Plastic bottles
  • Paper towels
  • Trays or baking sheets
  • Safety goggles
  • Disposable gloves, if recommended
  • Paper and pencils for recording predictions and observations

Instructions

  1. Prepare the workspace. Cover the table with a tray, baking sheet, or washable cloth. Place all supplies within reach but keep unused ingredients away from young children.
  2. Read the experiment first. Explain what will happen and identify any ingredients that must not be touched, tasted, or mixed with other substances.
  3. Ask for a prediction. Before starting, have children describe what they think will happen and why.
  4. Measure carefully. Use measuring spoons or cups rather than estimating. Accurate amounts make comparisons easier.
  5. Add ingredients in the stated order. Some reactions depend on when liquids, powders, colors, or other materials are combined.
  6. Observe without touching. Watch for fizzing, bubbles, foam, movement, color changes, temperature changes, or separation.
  7. Record the result. Write down what happened, how quickly it happened, and whether the prediction was correct.
  8. Repeat one variable at a time. Try changing only the amount of one ingredient, the water temperature, or the color so children can compare results fairly.
  9. Clean up safely. Dispose of mixtures according to the original instructions. Never pour unknown combinations down the drain.
  10. Wash hands and surfaces. Rinse reusable containers thoroughly and clean the work area after every activity.

Notes

Adult supervision is essential. Keep materials away from food areas and ensure safety goggles are worn during messy experiments. Work on trays to catch spills.
