This project creates cheerful and airy bunting made of crocheted flags, perfect for brightening up a space.

  • Total Time: 240 minutes

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight cotton yarn, weight 4 medium, about 420 total yards, or three 170-yard, 100 g skeins
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in the ends
  • Sharp scissors
  • Tape measure
  • Stitch markers (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make a slip knot, then chain 26 for the foundation chain.
  2. Row 1: Chain 2, which counts as the turning chain, then work 1 double crochet in the fourth chain from the hook and in each chain across. You will have 24 double crochet stitches at the end of the row.
  3. Row 2: Turn your work. Chain 2, then work 1 double crochet in the first stitch, skip 1 stitch, and work 3 double crochet in the next stitch. Repeat across until 2 stitches remain. Skip 1 stitch, work 1 double crochet in the last stitch, and count 18 double crochet stitches.
  4. Row 3: Turn and chain 2. Work 1 double crochet in the first stitch, skip 1 stitch, then work 1 double crochet in each stitch across to the last 2 stitches. Skip 1 stitch and work 1 double crochet in the last stitch. You will have 16 double crochet stitches.
  5. Row 4: Turn and chain 2. Work 1 double crochet in the first stitch, skip 1 stitch, and work 1 double crochet in each stitch to the final 2 stitches. Skip 1 stitch and work 1 double crochet in the last stitch. Your count is 14 double crochet stitches.
  6. Continue the same edge decrease for Rows 5 through 11. At the beginning of each row, chain 2, work 1 double crochet in the first stitch, skip 1 stitch, work double crochet across to the final 2 stitches, skip 1 stitch, and work 1 double crochet in the last stitch. Your counts are 12, 10, 8, 6, 4, 2, and finally 0 stitches. Fasten off after Row 11.
  7. Make seven flags in total. If you prefer to work one color, keep going with the same yarn. For color changes, use two flags in one shade, three in a second shade, and two in a third shade.
  8. Make the hanging chain. Leave a 10-inch tail, chain 24, then slip stitch into the top edge of the first flag. Chain 12, slip stitch into the top of the next flag, and repeat between all seven flags.
  9. After joining the final flag, chain 24 for the second hanging loop and slip stitch into the top corner of that flag. Fasten off, leaving another 10-inch tail.
  10. Use a yarn needle to weave in the ends. Pass each tail through several nearby stitches in two directions, then trim it close.

Notes

If the flags curl, lightly dampen them and block them flat by pinning the points and edges to the finished measurements. Let the cotton dry completely before removing the pins.
