Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn (about 170 yards per 100 g skein): 60 yards yellow, 40 yards black, 20 yards white
- One H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Polyester fiberfill (about 1 ounce or 28 g)
- Two 9 mm safety eyes
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
- Two stitch markers (optional)
- Tape measure (for checking the finished size and gauge)
Instructions
- With yellow yarn, make a magic ring. Work 6 single crochet into the ring, then pull the yarn tail to close the center. Join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet. You have 6 stitches.
- Chain 1, then work 2 single crochet in each stitch around. Join with a slip stitch in the first single crochet for 12 stitches.
- Work an increase in every other stitch, with 1 single crochet in the stitches between increases. You will have 18 stitches.
- Work 1 single crochet in the first stitch, then increase in the next stitch. You will have 27 stitches after the round.
- Work 1 single crochet in each of the first 2 stitches, then increase in the next stitch. Repeat around for 36 stitches.
- For the next 6 rounds, work 1 single crochet in each stitch around, keeping 36 stitches in every round. Work 3 rounds in black, then 3 rounds in yellow.
- Change to black yarn and work 2 rounds of 1 single crochet in each stitch around.
- Begin the decreases. Work 1 single crochet in each of the first 4 stitches, then make a decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat around for 30 stitches.
- Work 1 single crochet in each of the first 3 stitches, then decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat around for 24 stitches. Insert the safety eyes between the color bands before the opening becomes too small.
- Stuff the body with small amounts of polyester fiberfill.
- Work 1 single crochet in the first 2 stitches, then decrease over the next 2 stitches. Repeat around for 18 stitches.
- Work a final round of decrease over the next 2 stitches around for 12 stitches.
- Work a decrease over the next 2 stitches around for 6 stitches. Cut the yarn, leaving an 8 inch tail. Thread the tail onto a yarn needle, weave it through the front loops of the remaining stitches, pull the opening closed, and weave in the end securely inside the body.
- Make two wings with white yarn. Chain 8, then work 1 slip stitch in the second chain from the hook, 1 single crochet in the next chain, 1 half double crochet in each of the next 2 chains, and 1 double crochet in each of the final 3 chains. Cut the yarn and leave a tail for sewing.
- Fold each wing gently and sew it to the upper sides of the body with the yarn needle. Embroider a small smile with black yarn if you like.
- Weave in every remaining end with the yarn needle, passing the needle through several nearby stitches before trimming.
