Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn, weight 4 medium, in a soft cream or pale gray, about 170 yards per 100 g skein; you need about 120 yards, or approximately 70 g from 1 skein
- A small amount of worsted weight yarn in black for the eyes and mouth, about 8 yards
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Polyester fiberfill, about 2 ounces (55 g)
- Yarn needle with a blunt tip
- Scissors
- One stitch marker, optional
- Tape measure
- Two 9 mm safety eyes, optional, or black yarn for embroidered eyes
- A small scrap of cardboard, about 1 inch by 4 inches (2.5 cm by 10 cm)
Instructions
- Make the foundation chain: Form a slip knot, then chain, written ch, 21 stitches.
- Work the first row: Yarn over, insert the hook into the second chain from the hook, and pull up a loop. Yarn over again and pull through all three loops for one half double crochet, written hdc. Repeat across the chain for 20 half double crochet stitches.
- Turn and continue the body: Chain 1 for the turning chain. Turn the work, then make 1 half double crochet in each stitch across. Repeat until you have 15 rows total.
- Check the rectangle: Lay the fabric flat and measure about 6 inches tall by 4 inches wide.
- Fold the body: Place the rectangle with the right side facing outward. Fold the fabric in half so the short edges meet.
- Join the sides: Insert the hook through both layers at one side edge, attach the cream yarn, and make slip stitches through both layers down the side. Repeat on the other side, leaving the bottom edge open for stuffing.
- Add the filling: Turn the body right side out and add small amounts of polyester fiberfill through the open bottom.
- Close the bottom: Once the body feels evenly filled, join the bottom edges with slip stitches through both layers.
- Make the mummy strips: With cream yarn, chain 31 for each strip, then slip stitch back along the chain. Make three strips.
- Wrap and secure the strips: Place one strip across the front, angle a second strip, and place the third near the bottom. Sew each end to the side seams with a yarn needle.
- Add the face: Place two 9 mm safety eyes about 1 inch apart. If using safety eyes, secure the backs firmly. For a child-safe version, embroider the eyes and mouth with black yarn.
- Finish and shape: Weave in every remaining end, and smooth the body.
