Ingredients
- Sugar
- Water
- Food coloring
- Paintbrushes
- Paper (sturdy recommended)
- Small containers (several)
Instructions
- Make the sugar syrup by adding sugar and water to a bowl. Mix them together until they form a syrup. Stir thoroughly so the mixture is as even as possible.
- Divide the syrup between different small containers and add food coloring to each container, using a separate color for each one. Stir each mixture well.
- Give the children paintbrushes and let them apply the colored sugar water to the paper. They can paint lines, shapes, pictures, patterns, or abstract designs.
- Encourage children to blend colors on the paper and see what new shades they can create. They can also layer colors, make dots and swirls, or combine different brushstrokes.
- Set the paintings on a flat surface and leave them undisturbed until dry. Avoid stacking the artwork while the syrup is still wet.
Notes
Supervise young children during the activity. Food coloring can stain skin, clothing, and surfaces, so protect the work area and use washable coverings where practical.
