No reviews

Create a small, crocheted star keychain that serves as a charming accessory for your keys or gifts.

  • Total Time: 180 minutes

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), acrylic, about 120 yards total from one 170-yard per 100 g skein
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Polyester fiberfill, about 1/4 ounce (7 g)
  • Yarn needle for joining panels and weaving in the ends
  • Sharp scissors
  • One stitch marker (optional)
  • Tape measure
  • One small key ring with clasp
  • 4-inch (10 cm) loop of matching yarn or a short piece of sturdy cord

Instructions

  1. Make a magic ring by wrapping the yarn into a loose adjustable loop. Chain 10, then slip stitch into the ring to close the foundation chain. Pull the yarn tail gently to close the center.
  2. For Round 1, work 10 half double crochet (hdc) into the center of the magic ring. Slip stitch to the first hdc. You have 10 stitches.
  3. For Round 2, chain 1, then work 2 hdc in each stitch around. Slip stitch to the first hdc to complete the round. You will have 20 stitches.
  4. For Round 3, chain 1. Work 1 hdc in the first stitch, then 2 hdc in the next stitch; repeat this pattern around. Slip stitch to the first hdc. You will have 30 stitches.
  5. For Round 4, chain 1. Work 1 hdc in each of the first 2 stitches, then 2 hdc in the next stitch; repeat around. Slip stitch to the first hdc. You have 40 stitches.
  6. For Round 5, chain 1. Work 1 hdc in each of the first 3 stitches, then 2 hdc in the next stitch; repeat around. Slip stitch to the first hdc. You will have 50 stitches.
  7. For Round 6, chain 1. Work 1 hdc in each of the first 4 stitches, then 2 hdc in the next stitch; repeat around. Slip stitch to the first hdc, fasten off, leaving a 10-inch (25 cm) tail for joining. Make a second panel in the same way, keeping the yarn attached.
  8. Lay the two panels together with the right sides facing outward. Match the five increase points and place a stitch marker at each point if it helps.
  9. Using the attached yarn from the second panel, join the edges with single crochet (sc). Work 1 sc in each pair of matching stitches, stopping after about three-quarters of the star is joined.
  10. Add a small amount of polyester fiberfill through the open section, keeping the stuffing soft and not packed tightly.
  11. Continue single crocheting around the remaining opening, adding more fiberfill only if necessary for shape. Slip stitch to the first sc, fasten off, and weave in the ends.
  12. Make the hanging loop with a separate 4-inch (10 cm) strand of yarn or sturdy cord. Fold it in half, pass it through a top edge stitch, pull the ends through the folded loop, and tie securely around the key ring clasp.
  13. Ensure the star's shape and smooth any shifted stuffing. Avoid using heat on the acrylic yarn.

Notes

This project is suitable for beginners familiar with basic crochet stitches. Use a stitch marker to keep track of rounds if needed.
