Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), about 300 yards total, or 2 skeins of about 170 yards per 100 g skein
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
- Yarn needle
- Sharp scissors
- Tape measure
- Stitch marker (optional)
Instructions
- Make a slip knot and place it on your H-8 (5.0 mm) hook. Work 48 chain stitches.
- Row 1: Yarn over, insert the hook into the fourth chain from the hook, and work one double crochet. Work one double crochet in each chain across for a total of 46 double crochet stitches.
- Turn your work. Chain 3 for the turning chain. Work one double crochet in each stitch across.
- Repeat the previous step until you have completed 24 rows total.
- At the end of Row 24, do not fasten off. Chain 1 and turn the work to begin the border.
- Work one single crochet in each of the 46 stitches across the top edge, placing 2 single crochet stitches in the side of each of the 24 rows.
- At the first corner, chain 1 to turn, then work 46 single crochet stitches across the foundation-chain edge.
- At the next corner, chain 1 again.
- Work 48 single crochet stitches up the remaining side, placing 2 stitches into the side of each row. At the final corner, chain 1 and join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet of the border.
- For the second border round, chain 1 and work one single crochet in every stitch, placing 3 single crochet stitches in each corner chain space.
- Fasten off, leaving a 6-inch tail. Weave in the ends using a yarn needle.
- Lay the mat flat to measure and block if necessary.
Notes
This mat is suitable for beginners; the project utilizes US crochet terms. For best results, ensure to check your gauge and adjust the hook size if needed.
