Ingredients
- Worsted weight yarn, weight 4 medium, about 180 total yards (165 m), approximately 1 skein of 170 yards per 100 g plus small amount from second skein.
- H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook.
- One clean, dry 16-ounce plastic water bottle, with label and cap removed.
- Polyester fiberfill, about 2 ounces (57 g).
- Yarn needle with a blunt tip.
- Sharp scissors.
- One stitch marker, optional.
- Tape measure.
- One small wooden bead or crocheted ball for the nose, optional.
- A small piece of cardboard, about 4 inches wide (10 cm), for a yarn beard.
Instructions
- Use a magic ring to begin the foundation with 6 sc in the ring.
- Build the base by working 2 sc in each stitch around for 12 sc.
- Continue increasing: Round 3: 1 sc in next stitch, 2 sc in next stitch for 18 sc. Round 4: 1 sc in next 2 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch for 24 sc.
- Work Round 5: 1 sc in next 3 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch for 30 sc. Round 6: 1 sc in next 4 stitches, 2 sc in next stitch for 36 sc.
- Work 12 rounds of 1 sc in each stitch to form the body.
- Finish the body opening with 1 sc in each stitch around, fasten off leaving a 12-inch tail, and weave through final round loops.
- Slide the bottle into the crochet body and tuck fiberfill around it.
- Chain 32 for the hat foundation, join with a sl st, and chain 2.
- Work the hat in hdc for 4 rounds, maintaining 32 hdc in each round.
- Shape the hat by decreasing stitches as described through several rounds until 10 hdc remain.
- Cut lengths of cream yarn for the beard and pull through stitches, trim to soft point. Alternatively, attach a wooden bead for the nose.
- Assemble by placing the hat over the body and sewing in place. Optionally add a cuff.
- Weave in ends and finish.
