- 1 pair of US size 8 knitting needles, 14 inches long
- 1 US size 8 cable needle, 5 to 6 inches long
- 1 blunt yarn needle, 3 inches long
- 1 pair of craft scissors, 4 to 6 inches long
- 1 locking stitch marker (optional)
- 1 measuring tape, at least 60 inches long
- 1 swatch of cotton fabric, about 12 inches by 18 inches
- 1 basin or clean sink with room for at least 2 gallons of cool water
- 2 tablespoons of gentle fiber wash or mild unscented laundry detergent
- 4 clean bath towels, each about 27 inches by 52 inches
- 12 rustproof blocking pins, 1.5 to 2 inches long
- 1 clean, flat blocking surface measuring at least 40 inches by 52 inches
- 1 washable tablecloth or plastic drop cloth, at least 48 inches by 60 inches
- 1 pair of yarn-handling gloves, any comfortable size (optional)
Instructions
- Cover the table or floor to protect it from water.
- Set out the yarn, needles, measuring tape, and a pencil.
- Make a small swatch by casting on 24 stitches and working about 3 inches in knit-and-purl texture.
- Wash and dry the swatch using cool water and 1 tablespoon of fiber wash.
- Measure the fabric; aim for about 18 stitches and 24 rows across 4 inches after washing.
- Cast on 162 stitches using a relaxed long-tail cast-on.
- Knit the first row, then work one row of knit stitches followed by one row of purl stitches.
- For rows 1-4, knit 6 stitches, purl 6 stitches, and repeat across the row.
- On row 5, for the first group of 6 knit stitches, slip 3 stitches onto the cable needle and hold it to the front of the work, knit the next 3 stitches, then knit the 3 stitches from the cable needle.
- On row 6, work the stitches as they appear.
- Finish rows 7-12 as the stitches appear, repeating the process until the throw measures about 47 inches from the cast-on edge.
- Bind off loosely, keeping the yarn relaxed.
- Cut the yarn, leaving an 8-inch tail, and weave it through several nearby stitches on the wrong side.
- Wash the throw in cool water with 1 tablespoon of gentle fiber wash.
- Press out water and block the shape on a towel using rustproof blocking pins.
- Let it dry completely for 24 to 48 hours before removing the pins.
Notes
