Create cute little spiders using upcycled soda pull tabs and remnants of yarn. These charming decorations add a playful touch to your home for the Halloween season.

  • Total Time: 30 minutes

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight yarn (weight 4, medium), about 12 yards per spider, 36 yards total for three spiders
  • US H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • One clean aluminum soda pull tab per spider
  • Black embroidery floss, about 24 inches (61 cm) per spider
  • Yarn needle
  • Small scissors
  • One stitch marker (optional)
  • Two small safety eyes per spider (optional)
  • Small amount of black yarn or embroidery floss for a mouth (optional)

Instructions

  1. Make a magic ring, chain 1, then work 6 single crochet (sc) into the ring.
  2. Pull the yarn tail to close the center.
  3. In Round 2, work 2 sc into each stitch around (12 stitches).
  4. In Round 3, repeat sc in the next stitch, then 2 sc in the next stitch around (18 stitches).
  5. Place one clean pull tab over the crochet circle with the wider opening centered over the middle.
  6. In Round 4, sc in each stitch around, catching the edge of the tab (18 stitches).
  7. In Round 5, repeat sc in the next 2 stitches, then sc2tog (12 stitches).
  8. In Round 6, repeat sc in the next stitch, then sc2tog around (8 stitches).
  9. For Round 7, work sc2tog around (4 stitches).
  10. Slip stitch into the next stitch to close the round, cut the yarn, and pull the tail through the last loop.
  11. Thread the yarn tail onto the yarn needle and weave in the ends on the wrong side.
  12. Cut four pieces of black embroidery floss, each about 6 inches long, and tie each piece around the side of the covered pull tab.
  13. Trim the legs to about 2 inches, bending each into shape.
  14. Add safety eyes if desired, or embroider eyes instead.
  15. For a hanging spider, use remaining floss to make a loop and tie securely.

Notes

For a child-safe spider, use embroidered eyes rather than safety eyes. Ensure all parts are secured properly.
