Ingredients
- 2 boxes of blue gelatin dessert mix, 3 ounces each
- 2 cups boiling water
- 1 cup cold water
- 1 cup ice cubes
- 1/2 cup whipped topping, thawed
- 18 small gummy fish candies, about 1 inch long each
- 1/4 cup blue decorating sugar or blue sprinkles (optional)
- 1 round glass serving bowl, about 8 inches wide and 3 inches deep
- 1 medium heat-safe mixing bowl, 2-quart size
- 1 liquid measuring cup, 2-cup size
- 1 dry measuring cup set
- 1 long-handled spoon or silicone spatula, 10 to 12 inches long
- 1 small spoon, 6 inches long
- 1 refrigerator shelf with at least 4 inches of vertical space
- 1 rimmed baking sheet, 9 by 13 inches
- 1 kitchen towel, 16 by 24 inches
- 1 pair of heat-resistant kitchen mitts
- 1 sheet of plastic wrap, about 12 by 16 inches
Instructions
- Before you begin, cover the table with the baking sheet and lay the kitchen towel nearby.
- Set out the bowl, measuring cups, spoon, spatula, gummy fish, whipped topping, and gelatin mix.
- Boil 2 cups of water in a kettle or saucepan. Pour the hot water into the heat-safe mixing bowl, then add both 3-ounce boxes of blue gelatin mix and stir slowly for about 2 minutes.
- Add 1 cup of cold water and 1 cup of ice cubes. Stir for 2 minutes, then remove any ice that remains.
- Let the gelatin cool for about 10 minutes.
- Pour 1 1/2 cups of the blue gelatin into the serving bowl. Set the bowl on the towel-covered baking sheet and refrigerate it for 25 to 30 minutes.
- Arrange 9 gummy fish across the partly set layer. Press each fish only slightly into the gelatin with the small spoon.
- Slowly pour another 1 1/2 cups of blue gelatin over the fish.
- Refrigerate for another 25 to 30 minutes, until the second layer feels softly firm. Add the remaining 9 gummy fish.
- Pour in the remaining blue gelatin. Leave about 1/2 inch of space at the top of the bowl.
- Cover the bowl loosely with the plastic wrap and refrigerate for 3 to 4 hours. Overnight chilling gives the cleanest result.
- Just before serving, spoon 1/2 cup of thawed whipped topping into the center or around the edge.
Notes
You can substitute clear gelatin with blue food coloring if blue gelatin isn't available. Avoid hard candy to prevent difficulty in serving.
