A calming crochet project that creates a charming vintage-inspired Halloween cat decoration.

  • Total Time: 360 minutes

Ingredients

  • Worsted weight (weight 4, medium) acrylic yarn: about 320 total yards divided into approximately 240 yards of pumpkin orange, 60 yards of black, and 20 yards of cream
  • H-8 (5.0 mm) crochet hook
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends
  • Sharp scissors
  • Two stitch markers (optional)
  • Tape measure
  • Polyester fiberfill: about 2 ounces (57 g)
  • Two 12 mm safety eyes (or black embroidery floss for an embroidered face)
  • Small amount of cream yarn for the muzzle
  • Small amount of black yarn for the nose, mouth, and whiskers
  • Rust-proof pins or blocking mats (optional)

Instructions

  1. Form a slip knot, then make 28 chain stitches.
  2. Skip the first two chains, then make one half double crochet (hdc) in each remaining chain. You will have 26 hdc.
  3. Chain 2 to turn, then make 26 hdc across. Repeat this row until you have 22 rows total.
  4. Check that you have 26 hdc across the top edge before beginning the ears.
  5. Chain 2, then work 6 hdc across the first 6 stitches for the first ear. Repeat for 4 rows total.
  6. Join pumpkin orange yarn to the seventh stitch from the opposite edge and repeat to make the second ear.
  7. Use the yarn needle and the tails from the ears to sew the small gaps at their bases.
  8. Join black yarn at the lower right corner. Make 1 single crochet (sc) in each stitch and along each row edge, placing 3 sc in each outer corner.
  9. Continue the black border around the ears, following their angled sides one stitch at a time.
  10. With cream yarn, make a magic ring. Work 6 sc into the ring, then pull the yarn tail to close the center.
  11. Pin the cream muzzle near the lower center of the panel and add the safety eyes.
  12. Stitch the muzzle in place with cream yarn, then embroider a small black triangle for the nose and short lines for the mouth.
  13. Weave in all ends with the yarn needle. Shape the cat with your hands and block it cold.

Notes

For a gift, sew the cat onto a small purchased pillow cover or frame it. If giving to a child, embroider the eyes instead of using safety eyes.
