Ingredients

Base Ingredients

  • 6 medium-sized medium-sized apples (Red or Granny Smith work well)

Candy Coating Ingredients

  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup light corn syrup
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Food coloring (red, blue, and white)

Additional Materials

  • Wooden skewers or sticks
  • Parchment paper (for cooling)
  • Optional: Sprinkles or edible glitter for decoration

Instructions

Preparing the Apples

  • Rinse the apples under cold water to remove any wax.
  • Push a wooden skewer into the top of each apple, leaving some room for handling.

Making the Candy Coating

  • In a saucepan, mix sugar, corn syrup, and water. Stir until combined.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil, without stirring.
  • Use a candy thermometer to monitor the temperature until it reaches 300°F (hard crack stage).
  • Once at temperature, remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.

Adding Color

  • Divide the candy into three separate bowls.
  • Add red food coloring to one bowl, blue to another, and leave the third bowl white.

Swirling the Apples

  • Dip each apple into the desired color of candy coating while rotating to achieve even coverage.
  • While the coating is still warm, use a spoon to drizzle contrasting colors over the dipped apples, creating a swirl effect.
  • Place the apples on a sheet of parchment paper to cool and harden.

Notes

Experiment with different apple varieties like Fuji or Honeycrisp for assorted flavors. Add toppings such as crushed nuts or decorative sprinkles before the candy coating hardens. Consider a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg in the candy mixture for extra flavor. Drizzle melted chocolate over the candy for a rich twist.
