Materials

  • 1 cup Baking soda Use a generous amount for each container.
  • 1 cup White vinegar Essential for the reaction.
  • a few drops Food coloring (various colors) Use different colors for vibrant eruptions.
  • 4-6 pieces Small containers or cups (clean and dry) For mixing baking soda and vinegar.
  • 1 piece Tray or baking sheet To catch spills during the eruptions.
  • 1 piece Spoon For adding materials to containers.
  • 1 Eye protection Recommended for younger kids.

Instructions
 

Preparation

  • Set up the tray or baking sheet on a flat surface to catch any overflow.
  • Put the small containers in a well-spaced arrangement on the tray.

Create the Eruption

  • Spoon a generous amount of baking soda into each container (about one tablespoon).
  • Add a few drops of food coloring on top of the baking soda. Use different colors for a vibrant effect.

Initiate the Reaction

  • Slowly pour vinegar into each container with the baking soda.
  • Watch as the mixture erupts, fizzing and bubbling over! Listen for the fizzing sounds and enjoy the vibrant display of colors.

Clean Up

  • Once the eruptions are done, clean and dispose of the residual materials properly.

Notes

Customize colors to match a theme; try using clear bottles for a different visual effect; discuss the chemical reaction as you craft.
